Six random things about me:

I didn't have a garden growing up and only discovered a passion for plants and gardening when we came back from travelling abroad and rented a flat in London with a small roof terrace about 4 years ago. When we moved in the deck was an empty space. We lived there for over 2 years and when we moved out it the deck was so crammed with plants it took a whole transit van to move them all

I recently trained professionally in garden design (at the English Gardening School in Chelsea, London) and so hopefully on the road to a green-fingered career... my ambition is to work as a horticultural therapist and create sensory gardens that improve quality of life or help to rehabiliate.

I've lived and worked in Melbourne and travelled 30,000km around the whole of Australia (including Tasmania) by car in 4 months

I met my other half randomly at a surf camp in France and followed my heart from the tiny Isle of Man to big old London a couple of months later... that was over six years ago and we are still together and very happy

I was once a film extra alongside Julie Walters that was filmed on the Isle of Man (where I grew up)

I absolutely cannot stand celery, the smell, taste, texture.. cooked or raw. Yuk!

Ok, I am passing this tag on to:

April snow

Like pretty much everywhere in the UK, it snowed here in London overnight with a good inch or two settling on the ground. It was a bit of a shock this morning I must admit - I had no idea snow was forecast!

Unfortunately we hadn't covered the areas where the potatoes had just been planted and were a bit worried that the snow might lead to frost which spuds are not a fan of. So, we shoveled the snow off the ground first thing and covered the areas with polythene sheeting in the hope that there is no lasting damage. I think I'll keep them covered for the next few days, just in case we get any more freak snowfall. It is April, isn't it?

Speedy spud planting

It has been incredibly mild in London over the last two days and with another poor forecast for the weekend, we raced home from work to make the most of the extra daylight hour and get the potatoes in the ground... something we had planned to do at Easter weekend but had no chance because of the freezing weather.

So, we've managed to get a small amount of early Charlotte and a larger amount of early maincrop Desiree in the back border. There is the chance of a frost on Monday so we will take the advice from Monty tonight on Gardeners' World and protect the areas where the spuds are planted - probably with a makeshift cloche using polythene sheeting.

It feels like the weather is really getting in the way of garden progress at the moment which I have to admit is really quite frustrating. I bet the only time when the weather is half decent will be when I am work or away. Typical.
