Speedy spud planting

It has been incredibly mild in London over the last two days and with another poor forecast for the weekend, we raced home from work to make the most of the extra daylight hour and get the potatoes in the ground... something we had planned to do at Easter weekend but had no chance because of the freezing weather.

So, we've managed to get a small amount of early Charlotte and a larger amount of early maincrop Desiree in the back border. There is the chance of a frost on Monday so we will take the advice from Monty tonight on Gardeners' World and protect the areas where the spuds are planted - probably with a makeshift cloche using polythene sheeting.

It feels like the weather is really getting in the way of garden progress at the moment which I have to admit is really quite frustrating. I bet the only time when the weather is half decent will be when I am work or away. Typical.

That's it! When we are at home we have rain and snow. When we are at work, it's sunny! At least we are having a little sunshine today! I'm thinking about getting an allotment as i am fed up with not having enough space, but with this weather, i'm not sure i'd ever get there!

We thought about an allotment too in the early days, but I struggle to keep up with the space we have in the garden!

Glad to hear you've had some sunshine today - it has only just stopped snowing here (5pm) and we had to run outside earlier today to shovel the snow off the soil where the spuds are as we hadn't covered them (not expecting snow overnight!) They are now under some clear polythene sheeting and I just hope no lasting damage has been done...
