Time for a change

There has been a distinct lack of blog posts over the past few weeks as we have been away on our summer holidays and when we got back, the big decision was made to redesign the garden.

Our garden is teeny, really teeny and so far we have tried various combinations of raised beds etc to try and make the most of the sun we get throughout the day to try and grow our own. We are finding though that we are struggling to find enough time to tend to a lot of crops and many things just weren't thriving due to lack of sun, slugs etc. We are also desperate for an area to sit outside which we have never had in the two years that we have lived here.

So, the allotment style raised beds are being removed to make way for a decked seating area and veggies will be grown in two borders either side of the deck and in pots. The borders will be around 3.5 metres long by 1m wide so there will still be room to grow stuff, and should be much more manageable.

As I write this I am waiting at home for the first of three big deliveries due over the next few days. This afternoon our new garden furniture is due to arrive, tomorrow we should receive the decking kit and a new decorative compost bin is arriving on Saturday. The decking is also being constructed and put in place on Saturday so the garden will be undergoing quite a transformation this bank holiday weekend. I'll be posting some before, during and after photos shortly.

Initially I was quite sad to see the raised beds go and worried that we were doing the wrong thing. However, I've given it a lot of thought and I'm now much more excited about the changes as we will be able to have the best of both worlds. Room to grow some fresh veg, stuff that you just can't buy or just tastes amazing freshly picked, and room to sit out in the garden, eat outdoors with friends and generally use the garden more as extra living space.

So the blog will continue as I am by no means giving up on growing our own, it will just be in a slightly different way than before.

It is all going well, thanks for asking! The garden is looking incredibly different now but it is change for the better I think. Update post to follow!
