Brambles schmambles

A beautiful weekend of weather here in London and we made the most of it spending a few hours at the allotment both days. We had our first proper bramble bonfires and have cleared about three quarters of the plot now.

We made enough progress yesterday with chopping down brambles to progress to his and hers tasks today. My job to continue cutting down brambles and put them on the bonfire and his job was to start the ardous task of actual digging. Inevitably there are A LOT of roots that will need digging out, however we are thanking ourselves lucky as our neighbouring plots have actual small, unwanted trees to contend with.

With a bit of light veggie book reading over breakfast this morning, we have started to hatch a vague plan of how we might aim to lay out the plot and what, if anything, we will manage to get in the ground and growing this year! We did leave the site today with an armful of fresh rhubarb courtesy of fellow plot holder Steve and it did make me think how wonderful it will be when we manage to start bringing stuff home from our own plot!

Our plot neighbours seem to be having the same thoughts it seems and it is somewhat comforting that we are all in the same boat. Overgrown plots covered in rampant brambles and compacted, weed riddled heavy clay soil. Having said that, the clearing part so far has been really rather relaxing and cathartic. It is going to be very interesting to see how we all get on.

Allotment hours this weekend: 5.5

Total hours to date: 10
